Senator Pope is a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and has shown commitment in both words and actions in support of protections for the community including the Reproductive Healthcare Provider Protections Act (SB 13, 2023), the Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Health Care Act (HB 7, 2023), legislation eliminating publication requirements for name changes (HB 31, 2023), anti-book ban and librarian protection legislation (HB 123, 2024, and HB 27, 2025), and legislation protecting higher education and public school libraries (SB 45 and SB 65, 2026).
Furthermore, Senator Pope shows up. He has participated in forums, pride events, and training from LGBTQIA+ organizations. Many on the Executive Committee have personal stories about how he has shown up for us. Also, the general membership of the caucus supports his candidacy by a two to one margin in our straw poll.
The Executive Committee also considered the candidacy of Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard. Commissioner Richard also has a track record of strong support for the community, and several members expressed support for her. The decision to endorse Senator Pope is in recognition of his qualities as a candidate and not against any other candidate.
We believe that Senator Pope has the experience and commitment that we need in our next Lieutenant Governor.
